Basketry is a traditional craft in Martinique. To share this ancient technique and Martinican culture, the city of Sainte-Marie and La Vannerie du Morne des Esses organize a special week called “A la Rencontre de la Vannerie : Les Fibres Végétales”, (Meeting of Basketry : Vegetable fibers, in French). The Office of Tourism and Culture of Sainte-Marie, in collaboration with La Vannerie du Morne des Esses, organize a craft event around basketry. Called “A la Rencontre de la Vannerie”, this event will be held from the 13th to the 17th of April –Monday to Thursday at La Vannerie du Morne des Esses and on Friday at La Plaine de l’Union.
There will be a presentation of the art of basketry, lectures on fiber utilization techniques, the “master class” (scholastic and public) and a conference hosted by Benoît Bérard on the use of plant fibers by Native Americans. On Friday, it will be dedicated to the exhibition because the day will be animated by an Artisans’ Village, with parades and musical entertainment.
