Manman Dlo

Created by the same artist who made Cap 110 memorial in Diamant, the underwater sculpture Manman Dlo lies at the bottom of the sea, off Saint-Pierre. Rent a car and discover it for yourself.

Off the coast of the Saint-Pierre beach, at the bottom of the sea, is one of the most special art piece of the West Indies. This is Manman Dlo, designed by the Martinican artist, Laurent Valere.

Set up in 2004, Manman Dlo is a monumental sculpture (over 20 tonnes) representing a mermaid (a “manman dlo”, Creole version of the mermaid who, according to the myth, overturned ships). It is a tribute to the sea and an invitation to its protection.

The Manman Dlo art piece is composed of a face and a fin (located a few meters away) –as if the “mermaid” was buried in the sand, watching the boats go above her. Submerged just 30 meters from the shore, in front of the entrance of the village of Saint-Pierre, Manman Dlo is easily accessible. You only need a mask and a snorkel to admire from the surface. Adepts of snorkeling or diving can even go down to her.

A little advice from Jumbo Car Martinique : rent an estate car to go with your family at the beach of Saint-Pierre and to discover the impressive underwater sculpture Manman Dlo.
